Description
Baumea rubiginosa ‘Variegata’, commonly known as Variegated Striped Rush, is a striking ornamental grass-like rush native to Australia, renowned for its unique, upright clumps of narrow, reed-like foliage boldly striped with creamy white variegation against deep green stems. This semi-aquatic perennial thrives in moist to wet soils, making it ideal for water gardens, pond edges, and rain gardens, where it adds vertical interest and texture while supporting habitat diversity. The plant’s fine, linear leaves create a graceful, architectural form that brightens shady landscapes and complements naturalistic or contemporary garden designs. Baumea rubiginosa has a rich botanical history as part of the sedge family (Cyperaceae), valued for its adaptability and ornamental appeal. Its variegated form is especially prized for contrasting foliage patterns, enhancing visual intrigue throughout the growing season. This cultivar has gained recognition among landscape professionals for its low maintenance requirements and environmental benefits, including erosion control and water filtration in riparian settings.
