Description
Thuja occidentalis ‘American Pillar’ American Arborvitae is a striking evergreen known for its narrow, columnar growth habit, making it an excellent choice for creating formal hedges, privacy screens, or architectural accents in the landscape. This cultivar features dense, rich green foliage that maintains its vibrant color year-round, offering consistent visual interest through all seasons. Originating from the native Eastern White Cedar, widely valued by indigenous peoples for its durable wood and medicinal properties, ‘American Pillar’ has been selectively bred to enhance its upright form and compact size, typically reaching 10 to 15 feet in height with a modest spread. Its adaptability to a range of soil types and hardiness in USDA zones 3 through 7 make it a reliable, low-maintenance option for northern gardens. The cultivar’s resilience to urban pollution and deer resistance further contribute to its popularity. Recognized for its superior landscape performance, ‘American Pillar’ has garnered attention among horticulturists for combining aesthetic appeal with practical growth habits.
