Description
Juniperus horizontalis ‘Blue Chip’, commonly known as Creeping Juniper, is a low-growing, spreading evergreen groundcover prized for its striking steel-blue foliage that provides year-round color and texture to landscapes. Native to North America, this cultivar was selected for its compact habit and dense, mat-forming growth, typically reaching 6 to 12 inches in height and spreading several feet wide, making it an excellent choice for erosion control, rock gardens, and as a natural groundcover in sunny, well-drained sites. ‘Blue Chip’ is noted for its exceptional cold hardiness, drought tolerance, and minimal maintenance requirements, thriving in a variety of soil types and offering resistance to common juniper pests and diseases. Its unique blue-green needles deepen in color during colder months, enhancing winter interest in garden settings. This cultivar has earned recognition from horticultural societies for its reliability and ornamental value, often recommended by extension services and botanical gardens for sustainable, low-water landscapes.
