Description
Pinus flexilis ‘Extra Blue’, commonly known as Limber Pine, is a distinctive evergreen conifer prized for its striking silvery-blue needles that provide year-round visual interest in landscapes. Native to the mountainous regions of the western United States, this slow-growing pine is renowned for its adaptability to harsh conditions, including poor, rocky soils and cold climates, making it an excellent choice for erosion control and windbreaks. ‘Extra Blue’ is a cultivar selected specifically for its intensified blue needle color, which stands out vividly against traditional green pines, adding a unique textural and color contrast in gardens and naturalistic plantings. Historically, Limber Pine has been valued by indigenous peoples and early settlers for its durable wood and edible seeds. The tree’s graceful, irregular branching habit and moderate size make it suitable for both large residential landscapes and natural areas, where it supports wildlife by providing shelter and food. This cultivar has gained appreciation among horticulturists and landscape designers for its ornamental appeal and resilience.
