Description
Taxus x media ‘Dark Green Spreader’, commonly known as Anglojap Yew, is a versatile evergreen shrub prized for its dense, dark green needle-like foliage that maintains color year-round, making it an excellent choice for foundation plantings, hedges, and groundcover. This hybrid yew results from a cross between the English yew (Taxus baccata) and the Japanese yew (Taxus cuspidata), combining the hardiness and adaptability of both species. It features a naturally low, spreading growth habit, typically reaching 3 to 5 feet in height with a broad, mounding form, which provides excellent erosion control and landscape structure. The plant thrives in well-drained soils and tolerates a range of light conditions from full sun to deep shade, as noted by horticultural sources like the Missouri Botanical Garden and NC State Extension. Its resistance to deer browsing and relatively low maintenance needs have contributed to its popularity among landscapers and gardeners. Additionally, Anglojap Yew is valued for its longevity and slow growth rate, which allows for easy shaping and pruning. This cultivar has been recognized for its reliability and ornamental appeal, making it a staple in temperate landscapes across North America.
