Description
Afrocarpus gracilior, commonly known as the African Fern Pine, is a striking evergreen conifer native to the highland forests of East Africa, particularly Ethiopia and Kenya. This unique tree features gracefully drooping, fern-like foliage arranged in soft, flat sprays, giving it a delicate, feathery appearance that sets it apart from traditional pines. Unlike true pines, Afrocarpus gracilior belongs to the Podocarpaceae family and thrives in warm temperate to subtropical climates, making it a popular choice for landscape use in milder regions. It can grow into a stately specimen tree reaching heights of 50 to 80 feet with a naturally pyramidal form, adding vertical interest and lush greenery year-round. The African Fern Pine is valued not only for its ornamental appeal but also for its adaptability to various soil types and its moderate growth rate. It has gained recognition among landscape professionals and gardeners for its elegant texture and architectural presence, often used as a focal point in large gardens and parks.
