Description
Hesperocyparis macrocarpa ‘Gold Crest’, commonly known as Goldcrest Monterey Cypress, is a striking evergreen conifer prized for its vibrant, golden-yellow foliage that provides year-round color contrast in landscapes. Native to the central coast of California, this cultivar is a dwarf selection of the Monterey Cypress, which traditionally grows as a large coastal tree but ‘Gold Crest’ offers a compact, narrow growth habit, making it ideal for small gardens, containers, or as an accent plant. Its fine-textured, needle-like leaves display intense bright gold tones in full sun, which deepen to chartreuse in shadier conditions, adding dynamic visual interest. The Goldcrest Monterey Cypress is tolerant of coastal winds and salt spray, reflecting its natural maritime heritage, and is generally low-maintenance and drought-resistant once established. This cultivar has gained popularity for use in formal hedges, borders, and foundation plantings due to its neat form and vivid coloration. Notably, the Goldcrest selection has been recognized in the horticultural community for its ornamental appeal and landscape versatility.
