Description
Magnolia virginiana var. australis ‘Perry Paige’ Sweet Thing Swamp Magnolia is a distinctive cultivar of the native Sweetbay Magnolia, prized for its elegant, fragrant white flowers and glossy, semi-evergreen foliage that offers year-round interest. This variety is known for its more compact, well-branched growth habit compared to typical swamp magnolias, making it an excellent choice for smaller landscapes or naturalistic garden settings. Originating from the southeastern United States, the Sweetbay Magnolia has been valued by Native American cultures for its aromatic qualities and by gardeners for its tolerance of wet, acidic soils typical of swampy areas. ‘Perry Paige’ enhances these attributes with improved cold tolerance and ornamental appeal, exhibiting creamy-white, lemon-scented blooms in late spring through summer that attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Its adaptability to moist sites and resistance to pests and diseases contribute to its popularity among landscape professionals and homeowners alike. This cultivar has been noted for its unique combination of fragrant flowers, attractive foliage, and manageable size, making it a standout selection in native plantings and sustainable gardens.
