Description
Magnolia virginiana ‘Northern Belle’, commonly known as Sweetbay Magnolia, is a distinctive evergreen to semi-evergreen tree valued for its fragrant, creamy-white, tulip-shaped flowers that bloom from late spring through summer. Native to the southeastern United States, this cultivar is specially selected for its increased cold hardiness, making it suitable for northern landscapes where traditional sweetbay magnolias may struggle. Its glossy, dark green leaves with silvery undersides provide year-round interest, and the plant’s natural tolerance to wet soils and adaptability to various soil types make it an excellent choice for diverse garden settings, including coastal and woodland gardens. The ‘Northern Belle’ variety is celebrated for its elegant form and reliable bloom performance, contributing both ornamental appeal and a sweet, lemony fragrance that enhances outdoor spaces. This cultivar has been recognized for its resilience and beauty, making it a favored selection among landscapers and garden enthusiasts seeking a hardy magnolia with classic Southern charm.
